Owning a castle sounds like a fairy tale—envision waking up in a grand old structure, replete with secret passages, tall turrets, and breathtaking views. But in the real world, the picture isn’t so nice. Some castles, available at bargain-bin prices, and in some cases, at zero, are sitting idle. The catch? Maintenance nightmares, off-putting sites, lawsuits, and haunted histories. The castles are gorgeous, to be sure, but the back-story and the aggravation are enough to scare off any buyer.
In this article, we shall consider the reasons cheap houses are a bad dream to upkeep, and the eight unwanted castles, despite how cheap they are.
Why Cheap Castles and Houses Are Left Abandoned
At first sight, purchasing a home or castle at bargain prices sounds great. However, there are numerous reasons why many houses are unwanted, such as
High Maintenance Costs – Old buildings, especially castles, require constant repairs. Fixing stone walls, roofs, and interiors can cost millions.
Expensive Utility Costs – It’s very pricey to warm up a huge castle in the winter, and the modernization of old electricity and water piping infrastructure could be prohibitively costly.
Remote Locations – Many castles were built in isolated areas for defensive purposes, making modern living inconvenient.
Legal and Bureaucratic Issues – Some castles have protected historical status, meaning owners can’t renovate or modify them easily.
Paranormal Activity and Superstitions – Ghostly legends surround the castle, making them less attractive to most buyers.
No Practical Use – Aside from repurposing them into a hotel or tourist attraction, most castles are too huge to be used as a family home.
Now, let’s look at eight castles nobody’s interested in purchasing—hardly any money, at all.
1. Château de Lagarde (France) – The Expensive Yet Free Castle
Price: Offered for free
Nestled in the Ariège department in the south of France, Château de Lagarde, also the “Little Versailles of the Pyrenees” in local terms, traces back to the 11th century. The castle, in spite of all the riches in terms of history and architecture, has been put up for grabs to the first person who cares to undertake restoration.
Why Nobody Wants It:
The castle’s extreme state of dilapidation also poses significant issues in terms of safety, and parts of the building are at the point of collapse. Restoration could run into millions of euros, and the cost is too prohibitive to most prospective buyers. And because the castle’s a historic landmark, any restoration carried out must be in conformity to tight laws, and to the already daunting challenge are the bureaucratic hurdles.
2. Castello di Ruderi (Italy) – The Abandoned Italian Fortress
Price: Listed at €100,000
This ancient castle in Italy holds a storied history, but the castle is only a stunning ruin nowadays. The Castle di Ruderi lies in the countryside in Italy and has remained on the market for years, and nobody’s shown any interest in the castle.
Why Nobody Wants It:
The structure is in complete disrepair, requiring a full rebuild to be habitable. Its isolated location makes it an impractical choice for modern living. Additionally, any restoration would need to comply with strict Italian heritage laws, further complicating the process for potential buyers.
3. Ballymaquiff Castle (Ireland) – A Ruin Without Buyers
Price: Listed at €145,000
This historic castle in Galway, Ireland, offers medieval character but has fallen victim to major structural damage. It offers a special challenge to a determined buyer who is ready to undertake a major restoration project.
Why Nobody Wants It:
The castle requires a total overhaul, and the restoration alone runs many times the purchasing price. It’s in the boondocks and doesn’t have any modern amenities, so residential and commercial use are unrealistic. Tight heritage laws also dictate what you are and are not allowed to do to the building, and this deters interested buyers.
4. Château de la Mothe-Chandeniers (France) – The Flooding Castle
Price: Acquired in 2017 for €500,000 (Crowdfunded collective ownership)
This picturesque castle in France has fallen victim to many abandonings because of fire and flood damage, and the castle, in turn, is now a money pit to think about purchasing.
Why Nobody Wants It:
Is in a condition in need of repeated restoration from water damage. Restoration is costly many, many times the market value, and many investors have tried and failed at restoration. The castle also has vegetation overrun and unwanted wildlife, making restoration all the worse. Even if the castle could be restored, flood threats are an ongoing plague to long-term survival.

5. Dalquharran Castle (Scotland) – The Abandoned Estate
Price: Listed at £800,000 in 2019
Designed by the famous 18th-century designer, Robert Adam, the castle in the Scottish town of South Ayrshire is a landmark to the neoclassical architecture. Even despite the castle’s historic and architectural significance, the castle remained uninhabited for decades.
Why Nobody Wants It:
The castle’s general dilapidation calls for a costly and total restoration. Previous proposals to develop the castle, including to develop the estate into a hotel and golf resort, have all fallen through due to money issues and issues around planning. The castle’s remoteness also reduces the appeal of any commercial developments, making the castle less of an appealing investment.
6. Gosford Castle (Northern Ireland) – A Backdrop to A Game of Thrones Nobody Wanted
Price: Individual flats initially approximately £500,000
This historic castle, the famous location in Game of Thrones’ Riverrun, has found buyers elusive despite the resulting film star status.
Why Nobody Wants It:
Is too enormous to be occupied by humans. Plans to convert it into apartments have floundered because restoration comes at a steep price. The laws and historic protection ordinances offer another deterrent to any prospective developer. Part of the building lies in utter disarray and in disrepair, and expensive and detailed renovation is required.
7. Castle Čachtice (Slovakia) – The Bloody Countess’s Notorious Lair
Price: Not available (Restored ruin, accessible to the public)
This castle, having sheltered the notorious Elizabeth Báthory, is steeped in a great deal of dark history and superstition.
Why Nobody Wants It:
Horror legends and haunted histories render this a tough sell to any buyer. The building lies in disarray, in great need of rebuilding. It’s in a distant location, making the site less accessible, and less appealing. It gets tourists who are curious about the building’s deadly past, but to turn the building into a useable piece of real estate, the effort and money involved would be prohibitive.

8. Castle of Sammezzano (Italy) – A Moorish Hidden Jewel
Price: Previously offered at auctions from around €15 million; current status unknown
This stunning castle, whose Moor-inspired interiors and intricate details are famous, rests in disarray due to the problems of ownership and economic issues.
Why Nobody Wants It:
Bureaucratic red tape and paperwork get in the way of simple sales. The castle did not see proper maintenance in decades, and parts of the intricate interior are in shambles. Wildlife and squatters joined the challenge in the restoration. Even having gained world attention due to how stunning it is, nobody invested in preserving it.
Conclusion
While castles are normally considered glamorous and romantic, the life of owning them could not be less glamorous. Maintenance, remoteness, prohibitions by law, and the stigma of ghost legends all conspire to make them only marketable at an extremely discounted rate—though at such a rate, buyers are few. For those who dream to reside in a castle, the less glamorous aspect to castle owning comes into play. Even if the picturesque visions the abandoned castles give are appealing, they are the unattainable real estate pitfalls nobody desires to undertake. Would you dare to call any of these castles home if you could? Are the costs and the haunted histories just too great a burden to bear? Let’s hear what you think!
